The Caipirinha's origins date back to 1918 in Brazil where it was originally concocted as a remedy for the Spanish Flu. It was only a short time later that the Caipirinha was enjoyed as a cocktail, and became the National cocktail of Brazil. 

The distinguishing characteristic of the Caipirinha is its base spirit Cachaça. Much like rum Cachaça is a spirit distilled from sugar cane.
